| Acta launches catalyst for ammonia reforming |
|
Acta is delighted to launch our new catalyst for the decomposition of ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen by reforming. Ammonia reforming to hydrogen is expected to be an important technology to enable the use of ammonia as a practical carbon-free fuel for the future.
Hydrogen energy is widely predicted to be one of the mainstays of our future energy economy, but hydrogen gas itself is impractical to store and transport. Ammonia is one of the most hydrogen-rich carbon-free materials known to man. An ammonia cylinder at only 10 bar contains more hydrogen per kg or per litre than any current hydrogen storage system, e.g., hydrogen stored in a 700 bar compressed gas cylinder, in a liquid hydrogen tank, or in a metal hydride tank. Ammonia is also one of the most widely used chemicals in the world: over 100 million tons per annum are already manufactured and used, mainly as fertiliser.
Ammonia is therefore a strong candidate as a hydrogen carrier for the future. It can be used from LPG tanks for off-grid energy supply to homes and infrastructure items such as telecom masts, and it could become a practical gasoline replacement for automotive use.
The HYPERMEC 10010 is a ruthenium based catalyst which delivers exceptional ammonia conversion at 400oC. This catalyst is available in powder or pellet form.
Our current pre-commercial base metal catalyst HYPERMEC 10510 will offer excellent ammonia conversion for the lowest possible cost at slightly higher temperatures, and is expected to be available to customers by the end of 2008.
Acta has a number of customers now sampling its ammonia reforming technology and sees growing interest in the use of ammonia as a fuel.
